Above the archway that frames the seat of power, observe the fierce yet benevolent face of the Kirtimukha. This mythical creature, often translated as "Face of Glory," is a ubiquitous motif in Hindu and Buddhist art, adorning temples, doorways, and sacred objects throughout Asia. Legend has it that Kirtimukha originated from a tale of two demons, Jalandhara and Rahu, sent to test Lord Shiva’s power. Jalandhara, blinded by arrogance, challenged Shiva to create an even more powerful being. From Shiva's third eye sprang forth a terrifying monster, so hungry that it threatened to consume the world. Shiva, amused, commanded it to devour itself. The monster, without hesitation, obeyed, leaving only its face intact. Impressed by its unwavering obedience, Shiva declared that the face, now known as Kirtimukha, would forever adorn his temples, warding off evil and absorbing negative energy. The Kirtimukha symbolizes selfless devotion, insatiable hunger for the divine, and the protective power of the divine. Its presence atop this throne acts as a guardian, ensuring the purity of the space and the sanctity of the deity who occupies it. The intricate carvings of the Kirtimukha capture its fearsome yet awe-inspiring nature, a reminder of the power of devotion and the triumph of good over evil. Flanking the sides of the archway are detailed depictions of Makara, a mythical sea-creature, who is said to be the vehicle of Ganga.
