42" Large Wooden Lady Standing on Lotus Pedestal

$1081
Includes any tariffs and taxes

An earthly apsara. Standing with her feet cradling in the belly of a lotus bloom. Touching up her eyes with a blunt cosmetic instrument, held precariously betwixt the thumb and forefinger of the right hand. Chunky karnakundalas that graze the zenith of her clavicles, naked but for the neckpiece layered across her decolletage.

In that gossamer dhoti of green silk, her hips jut out seductively sidewards. Hair gathered in a high bun on top of her head. On a youthful countenance, a joyous composure. The necklace squeezed between the fecund orbs on her torso, almost touching a deep-set navel. Limbs so shapely and lifelike, it is almost as if they would break into visible motion any second now.

This wood-carved apsara is a contemporary reproduction of the temple wall art of South India. Limited but eloquent colour palette. Lotus petals forming a sort of frame around the voluptuous figure. A longline structure with rounded corners.

The Celestial Dancer: An Apsara Carved in Wood

This exquisite wooden carving captures the ethereal beauty and grace of an Apsara, a celestial nymph from Hindu mythology. Standing tall and elegantly poised, she emerges from a blossoming lotus, a symbol of purity, enlightenment, and divine beauty. The intricate details of her adornments, from the delicate bangles on her wrists and arms to the ornate jewelry gracing her neck and ears, speak of a rich cultural heritage and masterful craftsmanship. Her flowing garments, rendered in a striking green hue, are draped with a naturalism that suggests movement, as if caught in a gentle breeze or the rhythm of an otherworldly dance. The Apsaras are renowned in ancient Indian texts, such as the Vedas and Puranas, as celestial beings who inhabit the heavens, often serving in the courts of the gods. They are depicted as exceptionally beautiful, skilled in music and dance, and known for their ability to enchant mortals and gods alike. Legends tell of their divine performances that would entertain the celestial assemblies and influence mortal affairs. They are also associated with bestowing boons and influencing destiny. This carving embodies that mythological essence, presenting an Apsara in a moment of captivating allure.

A Masterpiece of South Indian Artistry

Originating from South India, a region renowned for its vibrant tradition of wood carving, this piece is a testament to the skill and dedication of its artisan. The wood itself has been worked with a profound understanding of its texture and grain, allowing for the creation of such finely rendered details. The subtle patina and hues that adorn the sculpture add a sense of age and authenticity, hinting at its journey through time. The carved frame surrounding the Apsara further enhances the composition, providing a distinct boundary that highlights her presence and elevates her from a mere figure to a sacred image. The posture of the Apsara, with one hand gracefully raised to her ear and the other resting gently on her hip, conveys a sense of poise and confidence. Her expression is serene yet captivating, drawing the viewer into her world. The lotus pedestal, intricately carved with multiple layers of petals, not only grounds the figure but also imbues her with an aura of divinity and spiritual significance, reinforcing her celestial nature. This artwork is more than just a decorative object; it is a piece of history, a conduit to ancient stories, and a beautiful representation of divine feminine grace.
