Only 1 available

The lovely Devi Sarasvati plays on Her veena. As the presiding deity over learning and the fine arts, Her iconography is incomplete without this classical musical instrument. She is the chaturbhujadharini, with one foot resting on the back of Her vahana as beauteous as She is, the peacock.

The Sarasvati murti that you see on this page is a wood-carved sculpture of substantial proportions. It features a pair of short temple pillars, from the tops of which rises a Kirtimukham archway. It borrows heavily from the traditional temple architecture of South India and forms an aureole behind the ethereal standing figure.

A variety of colours - crimson, ochre, and green, with hints of blue - has been introduced into the composition overall, as well as each of its aspects. Jet black curls cascading from under a bejewelled gold crown, and black omniscient eyes against a deep crimson complexion.

The Embodiment of Divine Harmony and Knowledge

This magnificent wooden sculpture depicts Goddess Saraswati, the Hindu deity of knowledge, music, art, wisdom, and learning. Revered across the Indian subcontinent, Saraswati is the divine muse who inspires creativity and illuminates the mind with understanding. In this masterful rendition, she is shown in her iconic form, gracefully playing the veena, an ancient stringed instrument that symbolizes the harmonious vibrations of the universe. The intricate details of her posture and the delicate rendering of the instrument capture the essence of her divine artistry.

A Symphony of Symbolism

The presence of the peacock alongside Saraswati is deeply significant. The peacock is considered her vahana, or mount, and is often associated with royalty, beauty, and spiritual awakening. Its iridescent plumage mirrors the multifaceted nature of knowledge and the celestial brilliance of the goddess. The lotus flower upon which Saraswati stands is another potent symbol, representing purity, enlightenment, and spiritual blossoming. The entire composition, from the goddess herself to her symbolic companions and the ornate background, speaks to a profound understanding of divine aesthetics and spiritual meaning. This piece is a testament to the rich artistic traditions that have flourished in South India, a region deeply steeped in cultural and religious heritage.

Craftsmanship Rooted in Tradition

Carved from fine wood, this large-scale sculpture is a celebration of traditional Indian craftsmanship. The skilled artisan has imbued the piece with life through the vibrant colors that adorn it, each hue carrying its own symbolic weight. The deep reds, earthy greens, and hints of gold and blue evoke the richness of Indian textiles and the sacred imagery found in temple art. The detailed carvings of the divine face, the flowing garments, and the elaborate decorative arch behind the goddess demonstrate an exceptional level of skill and dedication. Owning this piece is not just acquiring a decorative item; it is bringing a divine presence into your home, a conduit to the blessings of wisdom, creativity, and auspiciousness. This statue is a profound statement of artistic devotion and a beautiful representation of one of the most beloved goddesses in the Hindu pantheon.
