Lord Perumal is the Sri Vishnu Parabrahman of South India. In Tamil, the predominant Dravidian language, the suffix ‘mala’ conveys a dusky complexion, an unmistakable characteristic of the dashavataras. The Permul murti that you see on this page captures the great beauty of this dusky, even-toned deity of Hinduism.

Long, slender form. Imbued with every imaginable detail of attire and adornment, carved with the greatest care and perfect symmetry down the midline. A consistent monotone the colour of cool, molten gold. This Perumal figure has been handpicked from the studios of Swamimalai for the complexity and aesthetic of its finish - note the multitudinous hems of Perumal’s dhoti, the dynamic stance of miniature Garuda afore the plinth - as well as the unflinching precision of handiwork.

Speaking of handiwork, this is a panchaloha murti, made from an alloy of gold, silver, copper, zinc, and iron. Given the sheer proportion of detail of Perumal’s face and form, it has been cast with great care and skill via traditional lost-wax technique (madhuchista vidhana, in the terms of the shastras).

The Divine Presence of Lord Perumal

This magnificent bronze sculpture captures the celestial form of Lord Perumal, a revered deity in Hinduism. Standing at an impressive height, this artwork is a testament to the skill and devotion of its creators. Lord Perumal, also known as Vishnu, is the preserver and protector of the universe, and his divine grace is palpable in the serene expression and majestic posture of this statue. The intricate detailing showcases the classical Hoysala artistic style, renowned for its elaborate ornamentation and dynamic poses. Each element, from the flowing garments to the divine accouterments, is rendered with exceptional precision, evoking a sense of timeless beauty and spiritual grandeur. The work invites contemplation of the cosmic order and the benevolent force that sustains it, offering a focal point for devotion and an enduring symbol of divine protection.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship: Panchaloha and Madhuchista Vidhana

Crafted using the ancient Panchaloha technique, this statue is composed of five sacred metals, believed to imbue it with unique spiritual properties. This alloy, traditionally consisting of gold, silver, copper, zinc, and iron, is considered auspicious and capable of channeling divine energy. The Madhuchista Vidhana, or lost-wax casting method, employed here, is an age-old process that allows for the creation of highly detailed and complex forms. It involves sculpting a model in wax, which is then covered in a clay mold. The wax is melted out, leaving a hollow cavity into which the molten metal is poured. Once cooled, the mold is broken away, revealing the finished bronze masterpiece. This technique, passed down through generations, requires immense skill and patience, ensuring each piece is a unique work of art. The bronze itself, sourced from Swamimalai, a region historically celebrated for its bronze casting traditions, further enhances the authenticity and spiritual significance of this divine effigy.

Hoysala Artistry: A Testament to Divine Inspiration

The Hoysala Empire, which flourished in South India between the 11th and 14th centuries, was a period of exceptional artistic and architectural innovation. Hoysala art is characterized by its exquisite detail, delicate carving, and a profound understanding of form and movement. This sculpture embodies the distinctive aesthetic of the Hoysala school, with its emphasis on flowing lines, elaborate jewelry, and the graceful depiction of divine figures. The artists of this era were deeply inspired by religious narratives and sought to translate the divine into tangible forms that could be worshipped and admired. The serene yet powerful demeanor of Lord Perumal, coupled with the intricate embellishments, reflects the spiritual fervor and artistic sophistication that defined Hoysala craftsmanship. This piece stands as a magnificent representation of that artistic heritage, a bridge between the past and the present, connecting us to the enduring traditions of Indian sacred art.
