Ganesha: Remover of Obstacles

Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity, is one of the most beloved and widely worshipped gods in the Hindu pantheon. Known as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences, and the deva of intellect and wisdom, his blessings are invoked at the beginning of new ventures, ceremonies, and rituals. He is the son of Shiva and Parvati, and his birth is shrouded in myth. One popular tale tells of Parvati creating Ganesha from the sandalwood paste she used for bathing, breathing life into him and tasking him with guarding the entrance to her abode. When Shiva returned home and was denied entry by the unfamiliar Ganesha, a fierce battle ensued, culminating in Shiva severing Ganesha's head. Parvati was inconsolable, and to appease her grief, Shiva promised to replace Ganesha's head with that of the first living creature he encountered facing north. This happened to be an elephant, thus giving Ganesha his distinctive appearance. Ganesha is often depicted with a large belly, representing abundance and prosperity, and is frequently shown holding sweets, especially modaks, which are considered his favorite treat. His mount, the mouse (Mushika), symbolizes the ability to overcome any obstacle, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem. Worshipping Ganesha is believed to bring good fortune, success, and wisdom to the devotee.
