Manavala Mamunigal, or Alagiya Manavalan, is revered as a saint in the Hindu world. He was originally a theologian from the 14th-15th centuries, best known as a major proponent of the Tamilakam Vaishnava tradition.
The murti that you see on this page is a handheld yet sharply sculpted figurine. It depicts the saint seated on the coils of a snake, whose multitudinous hoods rise above His contemplative head. This is every bit reminiscent of Sheshanaga from Vishnu’s iconography.
It is a small bronze number, packed with a wealth of detail. For example, the pleats on His dhoti, the adornment on His torso, and the lifelike texture of the snakeskin. He is seated with His hands in namaskaram, a lot like another famous saint of the South, Shri Patanjali.
