A superb Maa Lakshmi sculpture to grace the home of the finest devotee. On a layered plinth of fresh lotus blooms She stands, raising the anterior hands in the mudras of aashirvada (blessing) and abhaya (fearlessness). Her long, slender form is as strong and lithe as the delicate stems of the lotus buds in Her posterior hands.

The Lakshmi statue that you see on this page is a one-of-a-kind example of South India’s great sculptural tradition. The medium is a superfine bronze made from a blend of five (‘panca’) different iron-based (‘loha’) alloys. It takes a lot of skill to master madhuchista vidhana, the lost wax metalcasting technique of the shastras, with which a mass of pancaloha has been turned into a Maa Lakshmi sculpture.

This richly detailed work is a visual exposition of feminine splendour. The hips of this smiling Lakshmi Mata statue are jutting laterally outwards. The hems of Her silks fly about Her silhouette and Her adornments rest against Her sharp curves. These accentuate the characteristic curves of the maternal form.

Embodiment of Prosperity and Grace

This magnificent standing figure of Devi Lakshmi is a testament to the enduring artistry and profound spiritual heritage of India. Crafted using the intricate Madhuchista Vidhana, or lost-wax, casting technique, this sculpture is a sacred representation of the Goddess of Wealth, Fortune, and Prosperity. The Panchaloha, a sacred alloy of five metals, imbues the bronze with a unique patina and a palpable sense of divine energy. Standing at an impressive height, this piece commands attention, radiating an aura of abundance and benevolent grace. Devi Lakshmi is revered as the consort of Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe. Legend has it that she emerged from the cosmic ocean during the Samudra Manthan, the churning of the ocean by gods and demons. Her divine presence is associated with material and spiritual well-being, beauty, and auspiciousness. She is often depicted holding lotus flowers, symbols of purity and spiritual awakening, and bestowing her blessings with a gesture of abundance. In this sculpture, she is shown with multiple arms, each holding significant symbolism. Her serene countenance and elegant posture evoke a sense of peace and divine presence, inviting prosperity and good fortune into any space. ––––––––––––––––––––

The Art of Lost-Wax Casting

The creation of this exquisite statue is a meticulous process perfected over centuries. The Madhuchista Vidhana technique begins with the sculpting of a wax model, which is then coated with clay. The clay mold is fired, melting and draining the wax, leaving a hollow cavity. Molten Panchaloha is poured into this cavity, taking the exact shape of the original wax form. Once cooled, the clay is broken away, revealing the finished bronze sculpture. This method, particularly prevalent in the bronze-casting traditions of Swamimalai in Tamil Nadu, ensures incredible detail and a seamless finish, capturing the divine essence of the deity with remarkable fidelity. The Panchaloha alloy itself, comprising gold, silver, copper, zinc, and tin, is believed to possess auspicious properties and enhance the spiritual efficacy of the idol. This traditional method ensures that each piece is a unique work of art, imbued with generations of skill and devotion.
