The scriptural basis of this unique idol is based on one of the stories about Lord Vishnu’s reincarnation. Back in time, Mahabali, an Asura King ruled the earth. Worrying he would make his way to Swargaloka, Vishnu was looked upon for help. He then takes on the Vamana avatar to visit King Mahabali, it is when the king asks what he could offer as Dakshina to the little brahmin - Vishnu himself appears in his Vishwaroopam. He asks for as much space as covered by his feet, as he steps onto all the three Lokas. His points his foot towards the Svargaloka, while the other side is seen pointing three fingers as the symbolism to his Dakshina. This bronze idol is a tangible story to be known.

A Divine Depiction in Bronze

Behold a breathtaking representation of Ulagalantha Perumal, an awe-inspiring form of Lord Vishnu, realized in the timeless medium of bronze. This statue captures the moment of cosmic triumph and divine magnanimity when Vishnu, in his Vamana avatar, measured the entire universe with just three steps. The multi-armed deity is depicted in dynamic motion, one leg planted firmly, the other raised to encompass the heavens. Each hand holds a symbolic attribute, reminders of Vishnu’s power and his role as the preserver of the cosmos. This bronze statue is more than just a visual representation; it's a gateway to understanding a central narrative within Hindu mythology. It invites contemplation on the themes of humility, deception, and ultimate cosmic justice. The intricate details, from the carefully rendered ornaments to the expressive facial features, reveal the sculptor's deep reverence for the subject. The bronze medium itself lends a sense of permanence and timelessness, ensuring this sacred image will endure for generations.

The Vamana Avatar and Cosmic Measure

The story of Ulagalantha Perumal stems from the Vamana avatar, the fifth incarnation of Vishnu. The demon king Mahabali, a benevolent ruler, had gained power over the three worlds. The gods, fearing his might, appealed to Vishnu for help. Vishnu, as Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin, approached Mahabali during a grand sacrifice and requested only as much land as he could cover in three steps. Mahabali, known for his generosity, readily agreed. Vamana then revealed his true form, growing to an immense size. With one step, he covered the entire Earth, and with the second, he encompassed the heavens. Having nowhere left to place his third step, Mahabali humbly offered his own head. Impressed by Mahabali's devotion and integrity, Vishnu granted him sovereignty over the netherworld, allowing him to return to Earth once a year during the Onam festival. This grand act of cosmic measurement is immortalized in this magnificent bronze statue.

Attendants of the Divine

Adding to the majesty and auspiciousness of this sculpture are the figures of Garuda and Hanuman, flanking the base. Garuda, the majestic eagle and divine vehicle of Vishnu, kneels in humble devotion, his wings spread in readiness to serve. Hanuman, the epitome of unwavering loyalty and strength, also kneels, his hands clasped in prayer. These figures symbolize devotion and service to the divine, and their presence enhances the spiritual significance of the statue. Their presence makes this piece a powerful reminder of the strength found in devotion and loyalty.
