Venugopala- Gopala (the protector of cows) Krishna, blowing sweet tunes
in his Venu flute, is a mesmerizing theme from the Krishna-Lilas, captured
beautifully by Indian art traditions. In this animated wooden statue, a young
Krishna, adorned regally by his Maa Yashoda, makes an appearance to charm the
three realms with his beauty.
The maker of the statue has given a gorgeous natural pedestal of
Vrindavan’s ground for Krishna, with flowers and grass growing as offerings of
nature of the dotting Lord.
On a lotus, Krishna stands, his waist protruding to one side, to
gorgeously shift his body weight, creating a charming posture.
The Sringaar or ornamentation of Krishna has been done with meticulous detail and beauty- his hairdo embellished with Mor Mukuta, flowers, and jeweled strings twisted with his delicate curls. A floral Shiraschakra holds the ornamentation at the back of his head, creating another lovely detail in the murti.
The plump body of Krishna is decked with jeweled necklaces, Yajnopavita or sacred thread, udarbandha (belly belt), and an ornate girdle that wraps around his Langoti (short dhoti or lower body garment).
The degree of detailing on the Gau Mata who accompanies Gopala is marvelous. From the fine hair on the forehead, the conch (Vaishnava emblem) on her head ornament, the bells around her neck, the delicate waves in her neck skin, to her front leg raised under which a small lotus blooms as a footrest- the divine beauty of Gau Mata has been perfectly presented in this statue. Together, the smiling Krishna and his bovine companion, create a vision that inspires Bhakti in the lotus-feet of Venugopala.
