The Nila Vilakkus is the traditional illumination of the temples of Kerala. They take this name, Nila Vilakku, given that their height and columnar design emphasize their significance in providing light to the raised areas. Such lamps are usually made of separable parts embellished with sacred designs that increase their visual splendor and religious value.

Nila Vilakkus are multi-wick oil lamps; most of them are five wicks, circular oil basins without wicks, which offer flexibility. At the top of these lamps is a figure, usually of a peacock, representing blessings from the gods. This brass lamp made in the traditional style of Nila Vilakku is not some decorative art but rather a means of invoking blessings from god, thus filling it with spirituality.

The Majestic Peacock: A Symbol of Radiance and Divine Grace

This magnificent brass lamp stands as a testament to the rich artistic heritage of India, embodying both functional beauty and profound symbolism. Standing tall and commanding attention, this lamp is not merely an object of illumination but a piece of art infused with cultural significance. The intricate craftsmanship evident in every curve and detail speaks of generations of skill passed down, resulting in a creation that is both timeless and exquisite.

A Beacon of Auspiciousness and Prosperity

Atop this impressive structure perches a beautifully rendered peacock, its form captured in gleaming brass. In Indian mythology, the peacock is a bird of immense significance, often associated with deities and auspicious occasions. It is the celestial vehicle of Lord Kartikeya, the god of war, and is also linked to the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. The peacock's vibrant plumage and majestic bearing symbolize beauty, royalty, and good fortune. Its presence atop this lamp signifies the bestowal of blessings, prosperity, and a divine radiance upon the space it adorns. The lamp itself, with its multiple wicks, is designed to hold a significant flame, symbolizing the dispelling of darkness, both literal and metaphorical.

Heirloom Quality Craftsmanship

Each lamp is meticulously handcrafted by skilled artisans in India, ensuring that no two pieces are exactly alike. This dedication to traditional methods imbues the lamp with a unique character and soul. The solid brass construction guarantees durability and a lustrous patina that will deepen and enrich with age, making this lamp a treasured heirloom for years to come. The elaborate carvings and decorative elements that adorn the stem and base add further layers of visual appeal, creating a piece that is as much a statement of style as it is a functional religious artifact. This lamp is designed to be a focal point in any setting, bringing with it an aura of elegance, tradition, and spiritual depth.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
