Manasa, the serpent goddess is believed to be the daughter of Rishi Kashyapa and Kadru, the mother of Nagas. Worshipped widely throughout the east and south of India, particularly for her immense powers - she saved Lord Shiva from the poison he had consumed and came to be known as Visha-Hari. Seated on her plinth, her body is slender yet well curved - representative of fertility, with prominent Teja on her Mukha and Saptamukhi Naga, coiling on the base, forms her shed. This piece in its careful design captures the complex aura of Manasa beautifully.
