The mighty
destroyer in Hindu tradition, Lord Shiva appears in this 5-foot large granite
sculpture in his “Saumya” or tranquil aspect.
Shiva stands
in a graceful pose, wearing his tresses in a towering jatamukuta, each hair is
beautifully delineated, giving the hairdo an intricate appeal with hair falling
symmetrically on the reverse of the statue.
Kundala (earrings), necklaces, belly belt or Udarabhandha, Yajnopvita (sacred thread), and an ornate waist ornament adorn Mahadeva, with a short dhoti, covered with a waist cloth whose knots fall on each side in stylized tassels.
With a slight bent in his left knee, Shiva’s body carries poise and a true-to-life appearance. Holding his trident and drum in secondary hands, Shiva raises his primary hands in Abhaya and Varada mudra, making this granite sculpture sakshata-Darshana, as if Mahadeva is standing right before his devotees.
