The Silapaddikaram, an ancient Tamil text mentions the goddess Durga as- “You once stood on the black head Of the wild buffalo robed In elephant skin and tiger skin, Now you stand, unwearied, The sprout of wisdom, the Veda beyond Vedas, adored by the gods.”

Eternally powerful, a form of Shiva’s beloved Parvati, goddess Durga as seen in this splendid bronze statue is worshipped in the Tamil country as the sister of Lord Vishnu, carrying his distinctive attributes- conch and discus. This bronze goddess Durga statue is a form of the Devi popularly known as “Vishnu-Durga”, owing to the association of the goddess with the Hindu preserver god.

Maa Durga in this Panchaloha bronze can be seen stately standing on a two-tiered pedestal, with its lower portion decorated with incised lines used to mark lotus flower, topped with a buffalo head that belongs to the demon-king Mahishasur, who was slain by the goddess, earning her the title of “Mahishasur-Mardini” or the slayer of Mahishasur.

Turning her opponent’s head into her footrest, the goddess we see in this bronze Durga statue is also called “Mahishasur-Vijaya-Durga” or simply “Vijaya-Durga”, hinting at the fact of her Vijaya or victory over Mahishasur. Devi’s posture is victorious, and her attire and fineries are queenly. Residing in this resplendent Durga bronze, the warrior goddess is victory personified.
