Shakyamuni Buddha is depicted in this mudra, symbolises the point in time at which the Buddha awakens and declares the world to be the proof of his enlightenment. It is thought that the demon Mara attempted to scare him just before he attained enlightenment by sending armies of demons and monsters, including his children, to tempt him to leave his meditation under the Bodhi tree. The demon king Mara asserted his own claim to the throne of enlightenment, but his army of demons professed to have witnessed Mara's enlightenment.

After that, Mara questioned Siddhartha regarding the witness. The ground is said to have yelled, "I bear you the witness!" when the former prince extended his right hand to touch it. The demon king vanished upon hearing the roar emanating from the earth itself. The Buddha, the enlightened one, made his first appearance the next morning. Therefore, it is thought that the Bhumisparsha mudra, also known as "the earth witness" mudra, honours the Buddha's triumph against the demon King Mara's temptation.

The Call to Earth: Bhumisparsha Mudra

This exquisite brass statue captures a pivotal moment in the spiritual journey of Lord Buddha: the attainment of enlightenment. Depicted in the Bhumisparsha Mudra, or "earth-touching gesture," the Buddha's right hand rests on his knee, fingertips reaching towards the earth. This pose symbolizes his victory over Mara, the demon who tempted him with earthly desires and fears just before his awakening. With this gesture, the Buddha is said to have called the Earth itself as his witness, affirming his right to attain enlightenment and his profound connection to the terrestrial realm. The serene expression on his face, with downcast eyes, speaks of deep contemplation and an inner peace that transcends worldly distractions.

Adorned in Auspiciousness

The robes of this magnificent statue are not merely fabric, but a canvas of devotional artistry. Intricately decorated with auspicious symbols, they speak of the blessings and positive energies that surround the enlightened one. These symbols, often found in Buddhist iconography, carry deep meaning and invoke protection, prosperity, and spiritual growth. The detailed craftsmanship, evident in every fold and embellishment, showcases the skill of the artisan and their devotion to capturing the essence of the Buddha's divine presence. The rich, warm patina of the brass enhances the sense of antiquity and sacredness, making this statue a truly captivating object of veneration.

The Alms Bowl: A Symbol of Renunciation and Compassion

In the Buddha's left hand, resting in his lap, is the Pindapatra, the alms bowl. This humble bowl represents the monk's renunciation of worldly possessions and his reliance on the generosity of others for sustenance. It is a powerful symbol of humility, simplicity, and the interconnectedness of all beings. The act of receiving alms is not just about physical nourishment, but also about fostering compassion and a sense of community. In a broader sense, the Pindapatra can be seen as holding the essence of the Buddha's teachings, the spiritual sustenance he offered to the world. The presence of this bowl, in conjunction with the Bhumisparsha Mudra, presents a complete narrative of the Buddha's journey from mortal struggle to ultimate liberation.

A Timeless Brass Masterpiece

Handmade from high-quality brass, this statue is a testament to enduring craftsmanship and artistic tradition. The material itself, brass, has long been associated with auspiciousness and durability, often used in the creation of sacred objects across various cultures. The careful casting and polishing bring out the inherent beauty of the metal, creating a piece that is both visually stunning and spiritually resonant. This eight-inch statue is perfectly sized to serve as a focal point for meditation, a decorative piece for your sacred space, or a meaningful gift for someone embarking on their spiritual path. It is an invitation to connect with the profound wisdom and boundless compassion of Lord Buddha.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
