This intricately carved sculpture captures the divine union of Lord Shiva and Parvati, known as Kalyana Sundaram. The statues, crafted in the traditional Thammampatti style, reflect the community's commitment to precision and excellence.
Depicting the sacred Panigrahana ritual, where Lord Vishnu gives Goddess Parvati's right hand to Lord Shiva, the idol is a vibrant representation of the celestial event. The colorful ensemble is set against a Kirtimukha aureole, symbolizing divine protection for the heavenly couple. Elephants grace the sides, their majestic heads raised in glory.
Every detail is meticulously carved, with Lord Brahma officiating the marriage, Goddess Saraswati playing the veena, Lord Nandi dancing with a Mridangam, and celestial beings surrounding the divine couple.
Nestled amidst the serene hills of Kollimalai and Pachaimalai, the village of Thammampatti in Salem district serves as a cradle for the age-old craft of traditional wood carving. With roots dating back almost a century, this community, comprising around 60 families and 200 skilled artisans, continues to preserve and showcase the rich legacy of their craft.
Thammampatti's artisans, carrying the wisdom passed down through generations, breathe life into the wood, creating not just an idol but a testament to the enduring artistry of a community dedicated to preserving its cultural heritage.
