Innocent and divine, with his hand pointing to the sky and earth, the baby Buddha image in Buddhism is a powerful symbol of his greatness, which he proclaimed immediately after his birth at Lumbini. After being born, the illustrious son of Maya took seven steps in each direction and with his hand raised and other pointing downwards announced that He is the most revered being in all realms. This is one of the earliest episodes of Buddha realizing and claiming his enlightened destiny, which makes baby Buddha a significant icon.

This brass baby Buddha is a simple artwork, depicting the baby Siddhartha in a plain dhoti, with a visible cranial bump (symbol of innate wisdom) standing on a bloomed lotus which represents purity of wisdom. Notice the absence of elongated earlobes (a characteristic found in other Buddha statues), since the drooping earlobes suggest a later stage of his life when Siddhartha gave up his heavy and jeweled earrings, which caused the lobes to extend in the first place.

Though such minor details are beautifully captured by the maker, the statue is otherwise plain, devoid of any ornamentation, to let the message and profound proclamation of the baby Buddha reach his followers.

A Glimpse of Serenity: The Young Siddhartha

This exquisite brass figurine captures a pivotal moment from the life of Siddhartha Gautama, the future Buddha, presented as a radiant infant. Crafted in Nepal, a land steeped in spiritual traditions and artistic mastery, this representation embodies the serene beginnings of an enlightened being. The infant Buddha stands upon a lotus pedestal, a symbol of purity and spiritual awakening that blossoms even from the mud of worldly existence. His right hand is raised, index finger pointing upwards, a gesture often interpreted as a benediction or a declaration of his spiritual supremacy. ––––––––––––––––––––

Echoes of Legend and Divinity

The stories surrounding the birth of Siddhartha are filled with auspicious signs and miracles. It is said that upon his birth, he immediately stood up, took seven steps, and declared that this would be his last birth. Each step was said to be accompanied by a lotus flower blooming. This very posture, with the raised finger, is believed by many to represent this profound moment of his first declaration of destiny and enlightenment. The serene expression on the infant's face, a hallmark of Buddhist iconography, suggests an innate wisdom and tranquility that belies his tender age. ––––––––––––––––––––

The Art of Nepal: A Heritage in Brass

The choice of brass as the medium for this sculpture speaks to the rich metallurgical heritage of Nepal. Brass, with its warm hue and ability to hold intricate detail, has been used for centuries to craft religious icons and decorative pieces. The artists have skillfully rendered the delicate features of the infant, from the rounded face and almond-shaped eyes to the subtle folds of his garment and the intricate design of the lotus base. The patina of age, inherent in cast brass, adds a depth and character to the figurine, hinting at its timeless appeal and spiritual significance. This piece is not merely a decorative object; it is a tangible link to ancient spiritual narratives and the enduring artistry of Nepalese craftsmanship, inviting contemplation and peace into any space it graces.
