The Moment of Enlightenment

This handcrafted brass statue captures a pivotal moment in the life of Siddhartha Gautama, the prince who would become the Buddha. It depicts him in the bhumisparsha mudra, often translated as "earth-touching gesture." This mudra symbolizes the moment when Siddhartha, after years of searching and meditating under the Bodhi tree, finally attained enlightenment. Mara, the demon of illusion, had assailed him with temptations and doubts, trying to prevent his awakening. But Siddhartha remained steadfast. When Mara challenged his right to sit beneath the Bodhi tree and attain enlightenment, Siddhartha touched the earth with his right hand. This gesture invoked the Earth Goddess, Prithvi, to bear witness to his countless lifetimes of virtue and spiritual practice. Prithvi, rising from the earth, confirmed Siddhartha's worthiness, vanquishing Mara and his army. This solidified Siddhartha's triumph over ignorance and delusion. This profound act embodies unwavering resolve and the power of accumulated good karma.

The Significance of Brass

The statue is crafted from brass, a metal that has been revered in Indian traditions for centuries. Brass is considered a pure and auspicious metal, often used in the creation of sacred objects and ritual implements. Its golden hue is reminiscent of the radiant light of enlightenment, further enhancing the spiritual significance of the statue. The meticulous handcrafting emphasizes the dedication and artistry involved in bringing this sacred image to life. The statue's substantial presence and intricate details make it a focal point for meditation and reflection.

The Buddha's Form

The figure sits in the lotus position, a posture of stability and inner peace. His face radiates serenity, his eyes are downcast in meditation. His right hand extends downward in the earth-touching gesture, while his left hand rests in his lap in the dhyana mudra, the gesture of meditation. The simple robe drapes gracefully over his body. Notice the detailed patterns adorning his robe, and the delicate curls of his hair, culminating in the ushnisha, the cranial protuberance symbolizing his wisdom. The statue sits upon an ornately carved lotus base, representing purity and spiritual unfolding. It serves as a reminder of the potential for enlightenment that resides within each of us.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
