The three terms–“Ardha”, “Nari”, and “Ishwara” —mean “half”, “woman”, and “lord”, respectively. When combined, these three words refer to the lord whose half is a woman. Ardhanarishvara is a form of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in a single androgynous being.

Half of the body portrays Lord Shiva with matted hair carrying a goad, symbolising masculine attributes. The other half depicts Goddess Parvati who is beautifully dressed and adorned with jewellery, representing the divine female qualities. Ardhanarishvara represents the synthesis of masculine and feminine energies of the universe and illustrates how Shakti, the female aspect of God, is inseparable from Shiva, the male principle of God, and vice versa. It is believed that worshipping Ardhanarishvara fosters spiritual growth, enhances inner harmony and encourages a holistic approach to life.

Embodying the Cosmic Union

This magnificent brass statue captures the profound and harmonious essence of Ardhanarishvara, a powerful deity symbolizing the fusion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This divine form, often depicted as half-male and half-female, represents the inseparable nature of the masculine and feminine principles that govern the universe. It signifies the totality of creation, the union of spirit and matter, and the balance of opposing forces. The figure stands poised on an intricately detailed pedestal, its form conveying both strength and grace. The left side, embodying Shiva, presents a powerful physique, adorned with masculine jewelry and a commanding headdress, holding a mace. The right side, representing Parvati, is depicted with softer, more feminine curves, elegantly attired with flowing silks and delicate ornaments, her posture exuding a gentle charm. The seamless integration of these two aspects into a single, unified being is a testament to the sculptor's mastery, reflecting the theological concept of the divine being beyond duality. In Hindu mythology, the creation of Ardhanarishvara is often attributed to Brahma's request to Shiva for a consort to help in the act of creation. Shiva, in his compassion and wisdom, merged with Parvati, demonstrating that creation is only possible through the union of masculine and feminine energies. This divine androgyny is not merely a physical representation but a philosophical statement about the interconnectedness of all existence. It suggests that the ultimate reality encompasses both dynamism and stillness, action and contemplation, the active and the receptive. This exquisite brass statue serves as a potent reminder of this universal truth. The lustrous brass, meticulously crafted, lends an aura of antiquity and spiritual depth to the piece. The intricate details in the headdresses, drapery, and ornamentation speak to the rich artistic heritage of India. Each element is thoughtfully rendered, from the divine smiles gracing the faces to the subtle musculature and flowing fabrics, all contributing to a captivating and spiritually uplifting representation of this revered deity. It is a piece that resonates with profound symbolism, offering a focal point for meditation and contemplation on the balance and unity inherent in the cosmos.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
