Embodiment of Compassion

This exquisite brass statue depicts Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, a revered figure in Tibetan Buddhism. With a serene gaze and graceful posture, this deity is the earthly embodiment of the compassion of all Buddhas. Known by many names across various Buddhist traditions, including Chenrezig in Tibetan, Avalokiteshvara is the spiritual son of Amitabha Buddha and is believed to hear the cries of all sentient beings and offer them solace and liberation from suffering. The intricate craftsmanship of this statue captures the divine essence of Avalokiteshvara. The flowing robes, adorned with delicate detailing, cascade around the figure, suggesting movement and grace. The urna, a symbolic spiral mark on the forehead, signifies wisdom and enlightenment, while the elaborate crown and jewelry speak to the divine nature of this celestial being. The gesture of the hands, known as mudras, conveys specific spiritual meanings, inviting contemplation and devotion.

A Legend of Infinite Compassion

The legend of Avalokiteshvara's devotion to alleviating suffering is deeply ingrained in Buddhist lore. It is said that he made a solemn vow to postpone his own entry into nirvana until all beings were liberated from the cycle of rebirth and suffering. Witnessing the immense pain and hardship in the world, his heart was overcome with compassion, and it is believed that his head split into a thousand pieces out of sheer empathy. The Buddha Amitabha then reformed these pieces into a thousand-armed form of Avalokiteshvara, with an eye on each palm, symbolizing his ceaseless watchfulness and ability to help all beings simultaneously. This representation highlights the boundless nature of his compassion.

Symbolism and Significance

The presence of a lotus flower, often associated with Avalokiteshvara, further enriches the symbolic meaning of this statue. The lotus, blooming in muddy waters but remaining pure and untainted, represents the ability to navigate the challenges of the world with grace and purity of heart. Placing this statue in your home or meditation space serves as a constant reminder of the power of compassion, the importance of mindfulness, and the path towards inner peace. This brass representation, with its rich patina and detailed artistry, is not just a decorative item but a sacred object that can inspire spiritual practice and bring a sense of tranquility and positive energy into your environment. It is a tangible connection to the profound teachings of Tibetan Buddhism and a beautiful testament to the pursuit of enlightenment and the alleviation of suffering for all.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
