A Guardian's Resounding Welcome: The Kirtimukha Brass Bell

This exquisite brass bell is more than just a decorative piece; it is a symbol of auspiciousness and protection, imbued with the rich cultural heritage of India. Handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail, it features the awe-inspiring visage of Kirtimukha, often translated as "Face of Glory" or "Face of Fame." This benevolent yet fearsome deity, a celestial guardian, is depicted here with striking facial features, a majestic mane, and an expression that is both commanding and protective. The Kirtimukha motif is a staple in Indian art and architecture, often found guarding entrances to temples and sacred spaces, warding off evil spirits and inviting positive energies.

Echoes of Mythology and Tradition

The legend of Kirtimukha originates from ancient Hindu mythology. It is said that when the demon Rahu demanded the nectar of immortality (amrita) as his rightful share from the churning of the cosmic ocean, the gods, in their deception, refused. Angered, Rahu attempted to seize the amrita. Lord Vishnu, disguised as Mohini, apprehended him. In his fury, Rahu threatened to consume the sun and moon. To subdue him, Shiva created Kirtimukha from his own sweat, a powerful being with an insatiable hunger. Kirtimukha devoured Rahu, but due to its relentless hunger, it continued to try to devour Shiva himself. Shiva then commanded Kirtimukha to be forever affixed to the lintels of doorways, acting as a guardian. Thus, the Kirtimukha represents the taming of ego and the establishment of divine protection. This bell, adorned with this powerful symbol, carries that ancient spiritual essence.

Artistry in Brass

The bell itself is crafted from solid brass, a metal revered in India for its purity and its association with auspicious rituals. The warm, golden hue of the brass lends an air of opulence and timelessness to the piece. The Kirtimukha mask is intricately carved, with delicate textures and patterns that highlight the artisan's skill and dedication. The flowing lines of the mane and the detailed contours of the face speak of generations of traditional craftsmanship. Suspended below the mask by a sturdy ring, the bell is designed to produce a clear, resonant sound, traditionally used to announce the presence of deities during puja ceremonies or to ward off negative energies and awaken spiritual consciousness. This piece, made in India, is a testament to the enduring artistry and spiritual depth of Indian culture, ready to bring its protective aura and melodious chime into your home or sacred space.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
