Hinduism reveres Garuda, the magnificent bird mount (vahana) of Sri Vishnu, as an extension of his Lord's heavenly aura and as his "Amsha-avatar" (half incarnation). The Garuda is worshipped as "Garudalavara" among the Alavaras (Vishnu devotees in Southern India), evoking the Garuda who has become lost (al) in Vishnu's bhakti (devotion).

Garuda holds a deific status in the Vaishnava tradition as a result of his devotion to Sri Vishnu, the protector of the cosmos. Artists create brilliant iconographic renderings of Garuda and are a required component of Sri Vishnu shrines. This handmade copper statue depicts Vishnu's vahana, in an anthropomorphic form, seated cross-legged, with his hands joined in Namaskara mudra paying obeisance to the blue-skinned Narayana.

The Divine Eagle: Embodiment of Power and Devotion

Experience the profound presence of Garuda, the celestial bird-man, with this exquisite copper idol. Crafted with meticulous detail, this small yet powerful representation captures the very essence of this revered deity. Garuda, the king of birds and the eternal foe of serpents, is a central figure in Hindu mythology, celebrated for his immense strength, speed, and unwavering devotion. He is the divine vehicle of Lord Vishnu, carrying the deity across the cosmos. Garuda's tale is woven into the fabric of ancient Indian epics. The Ramayana recounts his heroic feat of rescuing the abducted princess Sita, demonstrating his unparalleled courage and loyalty. He is also depicted in the Puranas as the victor over the Naga (serpent) race, symbolizing the triumph of righteousness over malevolence. In various traditions, Garuda is invoked for protection against venomous creatures and for granting courage and vitality. The intricate carving of his feathered wings, the majestic headdress, and the respectful gesture of folded hands in prayer further enhance the spiritual significance of this artifact. ––––––––––––––––––––
