With wide open brightly smiling eyes, Saraswati the Goddess of Knowledge and Art sits upon a three-layered pedestal made up of blooming lotuses.

Her front right and back left hand play upon the Veena which is rendered with realistic details and is indeed the highlight of the statue.

The other two hands of the goddess hold a book (symbolic of knowledge) and a rosary (symbol of concentration and meditation). Thus establishing Saraswati not only as the Goddess of Art but also the artistic process.

This is a Shivani wood carving. It is a traditional craft that originated in the Shivani village, located in the Shimogga region of Karnataka. Such statues typically have a strong decorative element, materially highlighting the spiritual aspect of the divine personality.

Here also we see flowing garments and accessories, a tightly clinging floral bodice, a rich dhoti decorated with round beads, numerous pieces of jewelry and an ornamented crown placed over Saraswati’s wide forehead.

This statue is a befitting tribute to the Goddess of Learning who is worshipped everyday across India in thousands of schools.

The Mythology of Saraswati: Goddess of Knowledge and the Arts

In Hindu mythology, Saraswati is revered as the goddess of knowledge, music, arts, wisdom, and learning. She is one of the principal goddesses in the Hindu pantheon and is often depicted with a Veena, a swan, and books. The swan is a symbol of discrimination, representing the ability to discern truth from falsehood, knowledge from ignorance. The Veena, often shown in her hand, not only signifies music and artistic expression, but it is also considered to be symbolic of the cosmic vibrations that underlie creation itself. The rhythmic melody of the Veena, as played by Saraswati, sets in motion the dance of the universe and everything within it. Her association with learning makes her a patron saint of students and scholars, invoked for wisdom and success in academic pursuits. Many temples and educational institutions are dedicated to her, showcasing the deep reverence she holds in Indian culture.
