Ganesha: The Remover of Obstacles

Ganesha, the elephant-headed god, is one of the most beloved and widely worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon. He is revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences, and the deva of intellect and wisdom. His blessings are sought at the beginning of any new venture, from starting a business to embarking on a journey. Every prayer begins by invoking Ganesha, ensuring success and warding off negativity. He is also associated with auspicious beginnings, prosperity, and good fortune. His unique form, with his elephant head, potbelly, and often just one tusk, makes him easily recognizable. Each part of his form has a symbolic meaning. The large head represents wisdom and understanding, the large ears signify listening attentively, the small mouth suggests speaking less and listening more, and the trunk represents adaptability and efficiency. He is typically depicted holding various objects, each signifying different aspects of his power and responsibilities.

The Significance of Panchamukhi Ganesha

While Ganesha is typically depicted with one head, the form of Panchamukhi Ganesha, or five-headed Ganesha, holds a special significance. Each head represents one of the five koshas, or sheaths, that make up the human being according to Vedanta philosophy: Annamaya Kosha (the physical body), Pranamaya Kosha (the energy body), Manomaya Kosha (the mental body), Vijnanamaya Kosha (the wisdom body), and Anandamaya Kosha (the bliss body). Worshipping Panchamukhi Ganesha is believed to bring harmony and balance to these five aspects of oneself, leading to overall well-being and spiritual growth. Each head also symbolizes the five elements – earth, water, fire, air, and ether – representing the totality of creation. Some traditions associate each head with the five senses or the five powers of Ganesha: creation, preservation, destruction, liberation, and illusion. The five heads represent the completeness of the universe and Ganesha's mastery over it. The ten arms in this manifestation further amplify Ganesha’s power. Each hand typically holds a different object, representing his various attributes and blessings. These may include a goad (to prod one forward on the right path), a noose (to bind obstacles), a broken tusk (symbolizing sacrifice), a rosary (representing pursuit of knowledge), a modak (a sweet symbolizing rewards for spiritual endeavors), and other symbolic items. The multitude of arms signifies his ability to assist devotees in numerous ways simultaneously.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
