Goddess Mahishasuramardini Durga on Wooden Base

$1175

Durga is “Durgati-Naashini”- the vanquisher of inauspiciousness. In Hindu tradition, the primordial feminine energy, the manifestation of the powers of all gods is Devi Durga, who in the artistic realm of India has been often envisioned as “Mahishasuramardini”, the mighty annihilator of the buffalo demon. In this aspect, Devi Durga has been the tutelary deity of several royal dynasties, who seek her blessings to attain victory on the battlefield. This majestic sandstone statue of the great mother goddess, depicts her in a divine roopa, in the pose of subduing Mahishasura under her lotus feet. Her hair is in a Jatamukuta, a style that relates her to Shiva, who in his sculptures is seen donning a similar hairdo.

Devi’s upper body, sculpted tastefully, displaying the perfection of femininity, is sparsely adorned, and she wears a thin dhoti with a jeweled girdle. A mesmerizing dynamism has been infused in the sculpture by the sculptor, through Mahishasuramrdini’s splendid posture, who in her powerful Chaturbhuja form, appears to be the sole protectress of Brahma’s Srishti.

The Divine Triumph: A Stone Manifestation of Goddess Durga

This remarkable stone sculpture captures the fierce and triumphant aspect of Goddess Durga, the universal mother and protector, in her iconic battle against the buffalo demon, Mahishasura. The artistry evident in this piece speaks to a deep reverence for the divine and a masterful understanding of form and narrative. Carved from robust sandstone, the sculpture stands as a testament to ancient craftsmanship, its textured surface telling a story of devotion and power passed down through generations.

A Cosmic Battle Reimagined

The imagery of Durga defeating Mahishasura is central to Hindu mythology, symbolizing the eternal victory of good over evil, righteousness over chaos, and divine power over demonic forces. Mahishasura, a powerful demon who could transform into a buffalo, had wreaked havoc upon the heavens and earth, challenging the very order of existence. The gods, unable to defeat him individually, united their energies and powers to form the formidable Goddess Durga. This powerful depiction captures that pivotal moment of divine intervention, showcasing Durga’s unwavering strength and resolve as she vanquishes the formidable foe. The dynamic pose of the Goddess, poised to deliver a decisive blow, embodies her fierce protective nature.

Artistic Merit and Cultural Significance

The sculptor has imbued this stone carving with a profound sense of movement and emotion. The meticulous detailing on Durga's ornate headdress, her elaborate jewelry, and the muscularity of her form all contribute to the captivating realism of the piece. The dynamic interplay between the Goddess and the vanquished demon, who lies beneath her feet, creates a powerful visual narrative. The rough, naturalistic finish of the sandstone itself adds to the primal energy of the scene, hinting at the raw power that Durga wields. Displayed on a rich, layered wooden base, the sculpture gains an added dimension of stability and visual gravitas, elevating its presence and making it a striking centerpiece for any sacred space or collection of artifacts. This piece is not merely a decorative item; it is a tangible connection to ancient traditions and the enduring power of faith.
