The Buddhist saviour goddess Tara is seated here in lalitasana on an elaborate and sumptuously ornamented lotus throne, upheld by the grinning faces of two lions. Her outstretched right foot is supported by a lotus. She is ornamented in numerous jewels and the gossamer drape falling over her bosom reveals more of her well-formed breasts than it conceals.

Tara's right hand is in the varadamudra, or the boon granting gesture, while the left holds the stem of a fully-blooming lotus, symbolizing the ripeness of her own youth. A flaming, stylized nimbus frames her head, at the either side of which can be seen dwarfish figures (yakshas) adoring the goddess. The apex of the composition is adorned with a kirtimukha (mask of glory).

Heavily influenced by Pala sculptures, the modelling is both taut yet delicate - an embodiment of sophistication and serene elegance. The compassion that is Tara's principal virtue is well reflected in her smiling demeanour and disarming expression.
