A Pauranic devata (deity from the Puranas), Lord Dhanvantari is Hinduism’s presiding deity over Ayurveda, India’s ancient healing system. In scripture, He finds mention in the Vishnu va Brahmanda Puranas; in history, as the King of Kashi (present-day Varanasi). The Dhanvantari murti that you see on this page captures the unassuming iconography of this Hindu devata.

This Dhanvantari murti has been sculpted from bronze, the medium of choice for elite South Indian sculptors of the traditional school. It bears every hallmark of traditional craftsmanship. Stateliness of form, and a regal bearing. A high crown that tapers like a templetop. Most importantly, the ornate, multi-tiered pedestal on which stands the deity.

On the face of Dhanvantari is a composure of joy and compassion. In His posterior hands, He bears symbols of Vaishnava significance; in the anterior right, the amrta-kalasha.

Embodiment of Healing and Divine Knowledge

This exquisite bronze statue captures the divine presence of Dhanvantari, the Hindu god of Ayurveda and a divine physician. Revered as an avatar of Lord Vishnu, Dhanvantari is the source of all healing knowledge and is invoked for well-being, good health, and the alleviation of suffering. The statue is crafted from Panchaloha, an auspicious alloy of five metals traditionally used in Indian religious iconography, believed to possess inherent spiritual and healing properties.

A Pious Form of Vishnu

Dhanvantari, in his celestial form, is depicted here with divine grace and serenity. He holds the Amrita Kalasha, a pot of nectar, in one of his hands, symbolizing the elixir of immortality and the potent medicines derived from nature. The other hands are adorned with a discus (Sudarshana Chakra) and a conch shell, both significant attributes of Vishnu, signifying his power to destroy ignorance and uphold righteousness. His posture is one of benevolent presence, radiating an aura of peace and restoration. ––––––––––––––––––––

Mythological Significance and the Churning of the Ocean

The legend of Dhanvantari's emergence is intrinsically linked to the Samudra Manthana, the epic "Churning of the Ocean." When the gods and demons churned the cosmic ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality, Dhanvantari appeared, holding the pot of Amrita. This divine manifestation brought forth the knowledge of Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine that continues to be practiced and revered globally for its holistic approach to health and wellness. Dhanvantari's appearance marked the dawn of a new era of healing, where the secrets of herbs, remedies, and therapeutic practices were revealed to humanity.

Artistic Craftsmanship and Spiritual Aura

This statue is a testament to the skill of master artisans who have meticulously shaped the Panchaloha metal to bring forth the divine form of Dhanvantari. The intricate detailing on his crown, attire, and the sacred emblems he holds reflects a deep understanding of iconography and a profound spiritual devotion. The lustrous sheen of the bronze adds to its allure, making it a captivating piece for any altar, meditation space, or sacred collection. Owning this statue is not just acquiring a work of art, but inviting the blessings of divine healing and wisdom into your life, connecting you to the timeless traditions of Ayurveda and the profound spiritual heritage of India.
