The boon stated that he could not be killed by man or beast, neither indoors nor outdoors, neither during the day nor at night, neither on earth nor in the sky, and by no weapon. Growing increasingly enraged by his son's devotion, Hiranyakashipu challenged Prahlada to prove Vishnu's omnipresence by showing him in a pillar within the palace. Upon Prahlada's affirmation, Hiranyakashipu struck the pillar with his mace. A deafening roar filled the air, and from the shattered pillar emerged Narasimha, a being neither man nor beast, but a combination of both.

Narasimha, with his ferocious lion's head and human body, embodied the perfect solution to Hiranyakashipu's boon. He seized the demon king and carried him to the threshold of the palace – neither indoors nor outdoors. It was twilight – neither day nor night. He placed Hiranyakashipu on his lap – neither earth nor sky – and disemboweled him with his claws – not a weapon. In this way, Narasimha fulfilled all the conditions of the boon, vanquishing the demon and restoring dharma to the world. The raised hand often symbolizes protection and blessings for devotees.
