The First Sermon

This meticulously crafted stone sculpture depicts the Buddha in a pose deeply connected to one of the most pivotal moments in Buddhist history: his first sermon. After achieving enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, Siddhartha Gautama, now the Buddha, traveled to Sarnath, a deer park near Varanasi in India. There, he encountered the five ascetics who had previously been his companions in his quest for truth. He delivered to them the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, setting in motion the wheel of Dharma and establishing the foundation of the Buddhist faith. The very air in Sarnath, according to tradition, still resonates with the echoes of this profound teaching.

The Dharmachakra Mudra

The hand gesture, or *mudra*, the Buddha is depicted in provides further indication of the connection to the First Sermon. This particular gesture, called the Dharmachakra Mudra, represents the "Wheel of Dharma" – the teachings that the Buddha began to propagate. The hands are held in front of the chest, with the thumbs and index fingers touching to form a circle. One hand generally faces inward toward the body, and the other hand faces outward. This mudra symbolizes the turning of the wheel of Dharma and the transmission of the Buddha’s teachings to all beings. It speaks of a balanced middle path, avoiding extremes, and the continuous cycle of learning and understanding.

A Gentle Reminder of Inner Peace

Crafted from stone, this sculpture captures the serene expression associated with the enlightened Buddha. The closed eyes suggest introspection, a turning inward to the wisdom and stillness within. The gentle smile speaks of the peace attained through understanding and compassion. Whether placed on an altar, desk, or shelf, this piece serves as a tangible reminder of the potential for inner peace and enlightenment that resides within each of us. It's more than just a statue; it's an invitation to cultivate mindfulness and contemplate the timeless teachings of the Buddha.

Artisanal Details

Notice the intricate details of the halo or *prabhamandala* behind the Buddha's head. These patterns represent the divine light that emanates from the Buddha. The lotus pedestal is also significant as the lotus flower is a symbol of purity and spiritual awakening. It rises from muddy waters, symbolizing the potential to rise above suffering and achieve enlightenment. The craftsmanship evident in this sculpture makes it a unique and meaningful addition to any space. Measuring 7.0 x 3.5 x 1.3 inches, this piece is perfectly sized for personal contemplation and display.
