The Awakened One

Crafted with meticulous detail, this brass sculpture depicts the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, in a moment of profound significance. The rich tones of the brass are enhanced by delicate copper and silver inlay, drawing the eye to the fine lines and subtle textures of the piece. The statue, with its compact dimensions of 5.5 x 4.0 x 2.5 inches, conveys a sense of serenity and profound stillness. It is perfectly sized for placement on a meditation altar, a desk, or any space where one seeks a reminder of inner peace.

The Gesture of Enlightenment

The defining characteristic of this statue is the Bhumisparsha Mudra, also known as the “earth-touching” gesture. The Buddha's right hand extends downward, fingers reaching towards the earth, while the left hand rests in his lap in the meditation mudra. This powerful hand gesture represents the moment of the Buddha’s enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya. Legend has it that Mara, the demon of illusion, attempted to dissuade Siddhartha from attaining enlightenment, challenging his right to this sacred space. In response, the Buddha touched the earth, calling upon it to bear witness to his countless lifetimes of virtuous actions that qualified him to attain Buddhahood. The earth, personified as the goddess Prithvi, responded with a mighty roar, validating the Buddha's claim and causing Mara to flee in disarray.

Material and Craftsmanship

The choice of materials speaks to the lasting value and symbolism inherent in Buddhist art. Brass, a durable and radiant alloy, provides a solid foundation for the sculpture, while the copper and silver inlay adds visual depth and complexity. The inlay technique, a traditional method employed by skilled artisans, involves carefully embedding thin strands of metal into the brass surface, creating intricate patterns and highlighting the contours of the Buddha's form. Each element contributes to the overall aesthetic, creating a piece that is not only visually appealing but also imbued with cultural and spiritual meaning. Displaying this statue is a way to connect with the rich heritage of Buddhist art and philosophy, and to cultivate a sense of mindfulness and inner peace in your surroundings.
