Tara's Origin and Significance

Tara, whose name means "star" or "savioress," is known as the mother of liberation. She represents the virtues of success in work and achievements. In Tibetan Buddhism, she is regarded as a bodhisattva, an enlightened being who postpones their own enlightenment to help others achieve liberation from suffering. There are many stories surrounding Tara's origin. One popular tale recounts how she was born from a tear shed by Avalokiteśvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, as he looked upon the suffering of the world. From that tear sprang forth a lotus flower, and from the lotus, Tara emerged, vowing to help him alleviate suffering. In another version, Tara was originally a princess who, after practicing for eons, attained enlightenment as a bodhisattva and vowed to always be reborn as a female to inspire and guide others.

The Many Forms of Tara

While Green Tara is among the most well-known, she is just one of many manifestations of Tara, each representing different aspects of enlightened wisdom and compassion. These different forms are often depicted with different colors and attributes, symbolizing specific qualities and powers. Green Tara is associated with active compassion and protection from dangers, while White Tara, for example, is associated with longevity and healing. Regardless of the specific form, Tara is revered as a swift and powerful protector, a compassionate guide, and a source of strength and inspiration for practitioners on the path to enlightenment. Invoking Tara through prayer and meditation is believed to bring blessings, protection, and the fulfillment of wishes.
