Hiranyakashipu, a powerful demon king, had been granted a boon that made him virtually invincible. He could not be killed by man or beast, inside or outside, during the day or night, on earth or in the sky. Emboldened by this protection, he terrorized the cosmos, declaring himself the supreme god. However, Hiranyakashipu's own son, Prahlada, remained steadfast in his devotion to Vishnu. Enraged by his son's unwavering faith, Hiranyakashipu subjected Prahlada to unspeakable tortures, each one miraculously failing due to Vishnu's divine intervention. Finally, in a moment of supreme arrogance, Hiranyakashipu challenged Vishnu to appear, asking if he was present within a pillar. In that instant, Vishnu manifested from the pillar in the form of Narasimha, a being neither man nor beast. As twilight fell – neither day nor night – Narasimha seized Hiranyakashipu at the threshold of his palace – neither inside nor outside – placing him on his lap – neither earth nor sky – and disemboweled him with his claws, thus fulfilling the conditions of the boon while simultaneously circumventing them.
