This Sambalpuri sari is a combination of maroon and green threads with a host of motifs drawn from the ritual and royal life of Orissa. The interesting point about the sari is its uniformity and the absence of the pallav. The entire sari is one continuous sequence of motifs.
The body of the sari is woven in vertical columns, with the floral and conch shell motif alternating. The conch shell motifs are an important element of the ritual life of Orissa, where it is blown to herald an auspicious moment. Another column on the sari is woven with a floral and creeper pattern. Another motif that is prominent on the sari is the lion. The lion was the royal symbol of the kings of Orissa and they find wide representation on the saris of Sambalpur. The border is a thin one, woven in white threads with close butis in the typical Sambalpuri style.
This sari makes not only an elegant evening wear but also an excellent party wear, and one that can be worn on ritual occasions.
