Can I Gift a Shiva Idol to Someone? Understanding the Meaning Behind the Gesture
Gifting is a simple way of showing care and affection across the world, and India is no different. As a culturally rich society, India looks at gifting as a transfer of blessings, joy, intent, and energy. This is the reason why statues of gods and goddesses are one of the most commonly exchanged gifts. For weddings, birthdays, Griha Pravesh (moving into a home), or festivals, the idols of deities make for a thoughtful gift. While the gesture is meaningful, many have questions about the type of statues that one can gift. A common question is- can I gift a Shiva idol to someone? And unsurprisingly, the answer is yes. However, there are certain things to be kept in mind, such as gifting it to the right person, with the right intent, and to be sure that the statue is made with the right material, if you are planning on gifting a statue of Shiva to a loved one.

Parashurama: The Warrior Sage and the Sixth Avatar of Vishnu
Parashuram- “parashu”- ax, Ram with an ax, is a warrior-asetic, a unique combination of austerity and valor, worshipped as the sixth incarnation of Vishnu, among the Dashavatara tradition. His devotees see him as a revered Brahmana, a protector of Dharma, and a Chiranjeevi (immortal) who remains on the earth throughout the rise and fall of Yugas. Parashuram was born as the son of the rishi Jamadagni and his wife Renuka. He was given the name “Rama”, and later, as he received the Parashu or ax from Shiva, he came to be known as Parashuram. He was the youngest of the five sons of his parents, the other four being Rukmavan, Suhotra (Sushen), Vasu, and Vishwavasu. In the Vishnu Purana, Parashuram is said to have a wife named Dharani (literally- she who carries, an incarnation of Lakshmi).

Akshaya Tritiya and the Power of Daana: A day when giving brings eternal riches
Akshaya Tritiya- the third tithi (lunar day) of the Shukla Paksha in Vaishakha maah is celebrated in Hindu and Jain tradition in the months of March-April. Some refer to it as a spring festival, however, in the legends and rituals associated with this festival, the day is supremely auspicious and sacred. People consider this a day ideal for buying rice as a sign of abundance, depositing money in the bank, and performing Daana- donation to temples and individuals. It is believed that the Punya (fruit of good karma) collected on this day never vanishes (akshaya means that which never reduces), and all sins are washed if one performs the rituals of Akshaya Tritiya with a good intention.

Myths, Monuments, and Megaliths of India’s Newest Nominees for UNESCO’s Heritage List
Recently, 6 of India’s ancient heritage sites were added to UNESCO’s Tentative Heritage Sites. These include the Megaliths of Mudumal, Ashoka’s rock edicts, sprawling Bundela palaces, and the naturally rich Kanger Valley National Park. But what makes these sites so special? What is UNESCO’s tentative list? And most importantly, what can be our role in preserving our heritage? Let us start this journey of answering all these questions, starting with a closer exploration of these newest additions to UNESCO’s list. You, too, can play a part in this journey. Whether by championing awareness, supporting artisans, or embracing India's traditional craftsmanship, every action counts.
