About The Book
The following couplet of ancient Sanskrit poet Kalidasa is as relevant today, as it was thousands year before: "Listen to the sermons of the dawn! Look only at this day, for it is life. In this brief time of day with all the diversity and realities of your existence, the joy of growth, the glory of action, the splendour of beauty are contained, because yesterday was a dream of happiness and tomorrow is only a vision; but today's good life creates dreams of happiness for every tomorrow, and every tomorrow is a vision of hope. Therefore, live this day with joy and greet the dawn." Swami Vivekananda advises us to live for others. He says: "This life is short, the vanities of the world are transient, but they alone live who live for others, the rest are, more dead than living". He further says: "History of the world is the history of a few men who had faith in themselves. That faith calls out the divinity within. If it is so, then, you can do anything." Question of Perception: To be aware of a single shortcoming within oneself is more than to be aware of a thousand in somebody else. The Dalai Lama Destiny and Self-effort: Man obtains desired objects by personal efforts. Those wanting in self-effort speak only of destiny. Neither the lazy, nor those who depend solely on destiny reach their goal. Therefore, a person should, by all means, persist in self-effort.

Preface
The title of my book, "Active Retirement and Growing Gracefully" is self-expressive. However, perception of "remaining busy" may vary from person to person. Some see it as a positive sign of productivity and importance, while others view it as a stressful and potentially unhealthy life style. Individuals who choose to be active may feel needed, in demand, and indispensable, which increases their self-worth In this connection, I remember one of my colleagues, who was six-seven years junior to me. As far as his performance was concerned, he was a duffer, nevertheless he was very popular to his seniors. The secret of his popularity lied in his 'quality' of being a "Yes Man". I always heard him say "yes Sir" and never "No Sir" Napoleon Bonaparte said "The one who always agrees, is more dangerous than the one, who once-a-while disagrees. Following Bonaparte I always took my colleague reliable. After about ten years of my retirement. I happened to meet him in the local bank. I enquired if he has retired; to which he shot back, that hehad retired two years back. Since he was always in good books of his seniors, I thought, he must have got some posting even after retirement. However, on enquiry, he replied in negative. To my asking as to how he passes his time, to which he averred - there is no problem of passing time; I am very busy. Then he described his daily routine in the following words: "I get up at 6.30 in the morning, go for the morning chores, take tea at 8AM, go through the News Paper for about one and half hour, take breakfast at about 10 AM, see some favourite serial or News on the TV. By this time, it is almost 1 PM. Then I take bath, have lunch, take after lunch siesta, go through few pages of some book, then afternoon tea-biscuit; 45 minutes walking-jogging, dinner, the news and serial on TV and finally 8 hour sleep in the night. He then asked me as to how I keep myself busy, I (sarcastically) replied, I too try to keep myself busy but not as busy as busy as you are. Then I described all that in detail, that I wrote in the second chapter "Am I leading an active life?" of my book. Such is not the only example where people could not differentiate between being selfishly busy for themselves and those who are busy for the betterment of the needy, family society and the country.
