Book Description
Foreword
The Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India has emerged over the years as the largest producer of thematic maps in the country. Mapping activities in the pre-Census period involve the preparation and updating of maps showing administrative units of the States, Districts, Sub-districts showing Villages, Towns and Wards in Towns for proper coverage of the entire geographical area of the country. The post-Census mapping activity comprises the preparation of thematic maps on Census data for various publications, i.e., Census Atlases, other Census publications and District Census Handbooks (DCHBs). These maps are invaluable not only to the Census Organization but also to other user agencies, departments, academicians, planners, researchers, students and policy makers. The "Administrative Atlas of India 2011" showing the latest administrative boundaries of the States/UTs (35), Districts (640) and Sub-districts (5924) as on 1st January, 2010 has already been prepared and published. The present volume "Administrative Atlas of West Bengal, 2011" shows the latest administrative boundary of the State.

Preface
Besides the conduct of countrywide Population Census since 1872, the Census Organisation is also producing variety of maps, charts and diagrams basically to ensure the complete coverage initially and analysis of results there after. In census mapping. both spatial and attribute data are combined to produce graphical presentation of the population parameters recorded at various administrative levels. The preparation of Census Atlas and District and Sub-district level maps from 1961 for country as a whole was a major landmark in the field of Census Mapping. In the next successive decade of Census 1971, the works for preparation of Administrative Atlas of the States and Union Territories were planned and prepared for most of the States/UTs. The 'Indian Census Centenary Atlas' published during 1972 to commemorate the completion of 100 years of the Indian Census had provided an important base for undertaking this publication. This became another landmark publication in the Census mapping and similar volumes were also prepared and published for 1981 by some States/UTs as per initiative of State Governments. Considering the usefulness of the publication, the preparation of Administrative Atlas was initiated again by the Census Organisation during 2001 Census and planned to produce the volume through GIS Technique using Computer Assisted Cartography. Though the Administrative Atlas 2001 volumes of the State/UTs were prepared and published after completion of mapping for priority publications, even then they find a great place among data users/planners/researches and academicians and the stock of the copies of most of the State/UT volumes got exhausted very quickly. This resulted Census Organisation to prepare the Administrative Atlas 2011 on top priority, even before completion of our regular publications.
