पुस्तक परिचय रजा फ़ाउण्डेशन पिछले कुछ वर्षों से, मुख्यतः हिन्दी में, हमारे समय के साहित्य और कलाओं के कुछ मूर्धन्यों की जीवनियाँ लिखवाने और प्रकाशित करने का एक प्रोजेक्ट चला रहा है। कवि जोशना बैनर्जी आडवानी ने कथक मूर्धन्य शम्भू महाराज की यह जीवनी मनोयोग, अध्यवसाय और अपने कथक-प्रशिक्षण का सदुपयोग करते हुए लिखी है। प्रामाणिक सामग्री का, ऐसे प्रकरणों में, अभाव सर्वविदित है पर जीवनीकार ने बहुत सारे लोगों से, उनके संस्मरणों आदि के सहारे जो जीवनी लिखी है वह संयोगवश एक मूर्धन्य कलाकार और गुरु पर पहली प्रामाणिक पुस्तक भी है।

लेखक परिचय जोशना बैनर्जी आडवानी स्प्रिंगडेल मॉडर्न पब्लिक स्कूल, आगरा में प्रधानाचार्य पद पर कार्यरत । दो कविता संग्रह - 'सुधानपूर्णा' और 'अंबुधि में पसरा है आकाश'। सीबीएसई की किताबों का सम्पादन। दीपक अरोड़ा स्मृति सम्मान - २०१९ तथा रज़ा फ़ेलोशिप-२०२१ से सम्मानित (कथकगुरु शम्भू महाराज पर विस्तृत कार्य) । अँग्रेज़ी, मराठी, पंजाबी, मैथिली, तेलुगु, बाड्ला, गुजराती और नेपाली भाषाओं में कविताओं का अनुवाद ।

आमुख कलाओं में भारतीय आधुनिकता के एक मूर्धन्य सैयद हैदर रजा एक अथक चित्रकार तो थे ही, उनकी अन्य कलाओं में भी गहरी दिलचस्पी थी। विशेषतः कविता और विचार में। वे हिन्दी को अपनी मातृभाषा मानते थे और हालाँकि उनका फ्रेंच और अँग्रेजी का ज्ञान और उन पर अधिकार गहरा था, वे, फ्रांस में साठ वर्ष बिताने के बाद भी, हिन्दी में रमे रहे। यह आकस्मिक नहीं है कि अपने कला-जीवन के उत्तरार्द्ध में, उनके सभी चित्रों के शीर्षक हिन्दी में होते थे। वे संसार के श्रेष्ठ चित्रकारों में, २०-२१वीं सदियों में, शायद अकेले हैं, जिन्होंने अपने सौ से अधिक चित्रों में देवनागरी में संस्कृत, हिन्दी और उर्दू कविता में पंक्तियाँ अंकित कीं। बरसों तक, मैं जब उनके साथ कुछ समय पेरिस में बिताने जाता था तो उनके इसरार पर अपने साथ नवप्रकाशित हिन्दी कविता की पुस्तकें ले जाता था : उनके पुस्तक-संग्रह में, जो अब दिल्ली स्थित रजा अभिलेखागार का एक हिस्सा है, हिन्दी कविता का एक बड़ा संग्रह शामिल था।

प्रस्तावना मेरा सबसे प्रिय शब्द है 'असम्भव', मेरे कपड़े पर एक छींट की तरह आ लगता है, असम्भव मुझे अँगूठा दिखाता हुआ कितना रचनात्मक लगता है, मुझसे यह असम्भव न छीना जाए। यह असम्भव मुझे अवध्य बना रहा है और साथ में हठी भी। उन दिनों शीत सितम्बर के अन्त से ही शुरू हो जाता था, अक्टूबर में हम पुलोवर पहन लेते थे। शाम को पाँच बजे से अभ्यास शुरू होता था, तब अन्य कुछ भी नहीं होता था, घुँघरू और छड़ी एकसाथ एक ही जगह पर रखे रहते थे, घुँघरू इसलिए ताकि नृत्य में रमा जा सके और छड़ी इसलिए ताकि अनुशासन में रह कर नृत्य में रमा जा सके। नृत्य में विश्वास ही मुझमें यह विश्वास भर पाया कि शम्भू महाराजजी की किताब पर कार्य किया जा सके और इसका पूर्ण रूप से श्रेय जाता है आदरणीय अशोक वाजपेयीजी और आदरणीय रश्मि वाजपेयीजी को, इनके मार्गदर्शन के बिना एक शब्द भी लिखना मेरे लिए सम्भव नहीं था। इन्होंने ही मुझे शम्भू महाराजजी के विषय में और अधिक गहराई से बताया, उनके परिवारीजनों के विषय में बताया, उनके शिष्यों के विषय में बताया, उनमें से कुछेक के फ़ोन नम्बर भी दिये। शम्भू महाराज हस्तक, भावच्छटाओं, संकल्पन, लयकारी, नृत्य, नृत्त, अभिनय, अभ्यास, संगीतात्मकता और अर्थान्तरों के एक समग्र उदाहरण हैं।
