प्रकाशकीय भारतीय वाङ्मय में पुराणों की व्यापकता एवं महत्ता असन्दिग्ध है और वे भारत के अतीतकालीन धर्म और संस्कृति के मूर्तिमान् गौरव के प्रतीक हैं। आज की बौद्धिकता भी पुराणों के प्रभाव और उनके महत्व को रंचमात्र भी कम नहीं कर पायी है। इस समय भी उनके प्रति वही श्रद्धा और सम्मान का भाव दृष्टिगोचर होता है, जैसा सुदूर अतीत में था। अपौरुषेय वेद में भी पुराणों की चर्चा है और उन्हें वेदों की ही भाँति नित्य और प्रमाणभूत बताया गया है। जैसे अध्वर्यु यज्ञ में कुछ पुराण-पाठ के लिए यह कहकर प्रेरणा देता है कि 'पुराण' वेद है। यह यही वेद है-'तानुपदिशति पुराणम्'। वेदः सोऽयमिति। किञ्चित् पुराणमाचक्षीत एवमेवाध्वर्युः सम्प्रेषितः (शतपथब्राह्मण १३१४।३१३)। इसी प्रकार अथर्ववेद, बृहदारण्यकोपनिषद् आदि वैदिक वाङ्मय में पुराणों के प्रति प्रकृष्ट श्रद्धा प्रकट की गयी है। सन् १९४३ में सम्मेलन के प्राण राजर्षि पुरुषोत्तदास टण्डन को यह ज्ञात हुआ कि अंग्रेजी, बंगला आदि भाषाओं में प्रायः सभी पुराणों के अनुवाद उपलब्ध हैं, पर हिन्दी में नहीं हैं। इससे प्रेरित होकर उन्होंने विद्वानों से परामर्श करके सम्मेलन द्वारा पुराणों के हिन्दी अनुवाद-योजना का प्रवर्तन किया, जिससे कि हिन्दीभाषी पुराण के अध्येता भी उनके अध्ययन से लाभान्वित हो सकें। यह कार्य अत्यधिक श्रम, व्यय और समयसाध्य था, फिर भी सम्मेलन ने पुराण-प्रकाशन-योजना के अन्तर्गत मत्स्य तथा वायुपुराणों के मात्र हिन्दी अनुवाद प्रकाशित किये थे। अनेक कारणों से यह योजना भी कई वर्षों तक स्थगित रही।

भूमिका पुराणों में अष्टादश पुराणों (जो कभी-कभी महापुराण भी कहलाते हैं) की जो सूचियाँ मिलती हैं, उनमें अग्नि या आग्नेय नाम अवश्य मिलता है, जिससे अग्निपुराण की प्राचीनता एवं प्रामाणिकता जात होती है। अग्नि नामक देव इस पुराण के वक्ता है, अतः यह अग्नि नाम से अभिहित होता है। आग्नेय का अर्थ है-अग्नि से सम्बन्धित अथवा अग्नि द्वारा प्रोक्त। अग्निपुराण के स्वरूप एवं परिमाण के विषय में पुराणों में कुछ निर्देश मिलते हैं। मत्स्यपुराण में कहा गया है कि जिस पुराण में अग्नि ने वशिष्ठ को ईशानकल्प का वृत्तान्त कहा, वह आग्नेयपुराण है (५३।२८)। स्कन्दपुराण के प्रभासखण्ड (२१४७) तथा नारदीयपुराण (१।९९।१) का भी यही मत है। प्रचलित अग्निपुराण का वक्ता यद्यपि अग्नि है, तथापि इसमें ईशानकल्प का नाम नहीं मिलता। इससे यह बात स्पष्ट हो जाती है कि कोई प्राचीनतर ईशानकल्पीय वृत्तान्तख्यापक अग्निपुराण था, जो लुप्त हो गया है और प्रचलित अग्निपुराण उस पुराण का आश्रय करके लिखा गया है (अल्प प्राचीन सामग्री के साथ अत्यधिक नवीन सामग्री जोड़कर)। विभिन्न समयों में विभिन्न अग्निपुराण (प्राचीन तथा नवीन सामग्री का संयोजनात्मक) प्रचलित थे-इस तथ्य में सर्वबलिष्ठ हेतु है-अग्निपुराण के परिमाण के विषय में मतभेद। अग्निपुराण में एक स्थल पर अग्निपुराण का परिमाण १२००० (२७२/११) तथा अन्यत्र (३८३/६४) १५००० कहा गया है। इस पुराण का स्लोकपरिमाण भागवतानुसार १५४०० (१२।१३।५), देवीभागवतानुसार १६००० (१।३।९) तथा नारदीयपुराणानुसार १५००० है (१।९९।२)।
