Book Description
About the Book
The first section presented by Sri Rajagopala Achariar gives a detailed account of the Alwar Saints and the Acaryas. He facilitates the discussion of the question of their age, the estimate of their literary and other merits and the value to be attached to their works in the formation of the Visishtadvaita School of Philosophy. The Sri Vaisnava chroniclers make justly a distinction between the Alvars and the Acaryas, the former being saints who had realized Brahman and had personal enjoyment of His grace, whereas the latter were learned propounders and elaboraters of the philosophy contained in the works of the Alvars and were cer-tainly far lower than the Alvar saints. The second section presented by T A Gopinatha Rao is an edited version of the Lecture series, given as part of the Sir Subramanya Iyer Lectures on the History of Sri Vaishnavas in the year 1917 December at Madras University. The chapters in this section forms the lecture series and presents the history of Vaishanavism based on icono-graphic and literary aspects based on the historical criticism upon the more or less florid and highly coloured accounts handed down to us regarding the lives of the Alvars and Acaryas. A very detailed notes and rferences in Tamil abd sanskrit sources can form a basis for furthe research on the contribution of Alwars in Sanskrit and Tamil in the chronological order of the different alwars.
