Tradition of political thinking in India is as ancient as the culture and literature of Bharat. Rajdharma has been termed as the most important aspect of human life by our ancestors. The present book traces various dimensions of politics in the yesteryears. It also analyzes the postulates of Rajdharma in Sanskrit works, including the Vedas, epics, and other treatise produced by our forefathers besides juxtaposing that to the contemporary political spectrum.

Political thinking in ancient India has been an area of continuous enquiry for Political many scholars around the globe. The tendency to study ancient Indian political system was widely prevalent during freedom struggle. But the post-Independence Indian scholarship either deliberately ignored this field or purposefully attempted to establish the elements of class-struggle in each and every aspect of ancient Indian socio-political life. Of late, serious research attempts with the perspective of Indian knowledge system have commenced extensively in Indian institutions of higher learning. Some of them have incorporated aspects of ancient Indian knowledge of different disciplines in their syllabi. The present book attempts to fill the gap of providing properly referenced study material to the research scholars, students and people interested in exploring the society and polity of yester years. We have tried to collate and classify a huge amount of existing works and original texts in contemporary perspective. Additionally, bibliography in both Hindi and English languages besides a good number of books reviewed in both the languages have also been appended. We wish to put on record our sincere gratitude to all our friends and well-wishers for extending all out support in all our academic endeavours as usual. Dr. Sonia Verma and Ms. Priyanka Tanwar deserve special mention for their hard work put in the review sections and bibliography. Mr. Sachin Giri and Ms. Ravina Tagor are to be thanked for their appreciable assistance. The present book is presented before the readers with the hope that this will be an addition to the existing wealth of knowledge in the field of ancient Indian statecraft. We pray for dispassionate review of this work by scholars of this field because that is the only way of improvisation, as the famous Sanskrit poet Kalidasa pronounces: -
