THIS volume is based on addresses delivered in different places over a period of years, and carefully revised. It contains portions written to elucidate points touched upon in the addresses. They are being printed in this form in the belief that they may be of some help to those interested in such matters.
The subject of Reality is a difficult one, and whatever is in the following pages represents the writer's approach and is essentially an attempt on his part to define his own understanding. The stand-point with regard to all matters in the book is that of a student of Theosophy; what Theosophy is, as seen from the writer's point of view, is explained in one of the chapters.
To one who seeks true understanding without that dogmatism which ever negates the seeking, there is no finality. Seeking implies discovery, and, fundamentally, each must come to the truth by him-self. But there is a value in exchange of views, and even if the comments of readers do not all reach the writer the calling forth of those comments is in itself part of the process of exchange.
The writing of this foreword serves one excellent purpose - to thank friends and co-workers for their valuable help in editing and correcting the proofs of this book, as well as the other small volumes which happen to bear my name. I would have been pleased if they bore no name, but in life as it is organized in these days that is not possible. If what is said represents the truth to any extent, it can be no one's property or invention. Truth has no owners.
