Book Description
About the Book
With Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy-Pather Panchali (1955), Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959)-a stirring new cinematic voice was born. Listed among the greatest films of all time, the trilogy follows the unforgettable character of Apu-a free-spirited child in impoverished rural Bengal who, with his passion for creativity and learning, matures into an urban adolescent and, finally, into a complex, sensitive, battered man.

This edition presents the complete film scripts of the three masterpieces, along with an expansive interview with Ray by filmmaker Shyam Bengal, in which Ray talks about early influences, the experience of making the Apu Trilogy, the importance of music, and the portrayal of women in his film as well as other aspects of his craft. Richly illustrated with production stills and numerous sketches by Ray, this volume celebrates a milestone in international cinema and forms an essential document for film enthusiasts across the world.

About the Author
Satyajit Ray (1921-1992) was a writer, illustrator and one of the greatest filmmakers of the twentieth century who brought world recognition to Indian cinema. Noted for his humanism, versatility, and detailed control over his films and their music, Ray received several awards from film festivals at Cannes, Berlin, Venice and Moscow, as well as an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement in 1992.

Preface
The Apu Trilogy was not conceived as a trilogy. When we made Pather Panchali ['Song of the Road'], we couldn't think beyond the film. The critical and box-office success of Pather Panchali triggered off Aparajito ["The Unvanquished'], which flopped and left me confused as to what I should do next. I made two contrasted films-Parash Pathar and Jal-saghar ["The Music Room']-by which time Aparajito had gone on to win the top prize at the Venice film festival. It was at the press conference in Venice that I was asked if I had a trilogy in mind. I found myself saying yes. At that time I didn't know if there was a third film in Bibhutibhusan's novel. I came back home, reread Aparajito, and discovered Apur Sansar ["The World of Apu'] in it.

Both Pather Panchali and Aparajito are largely the work of amateurs as far as the externals of technique are concerned. Both films came to inordinate lengths when first edited, and had to be whittled down, sometimes leading to the omission of entire scenes. By the time of Apu Sansar, we had acquired a certain amount of professional competence. The script here was tighter, and so was the shooting. As a result, nothing was found to be redundant at the time of cutting.
