Preface
The kings of the great Chola Empire built the finest, most brilliant and unmatched Chola temples. The Chola Empire extended all over South India and Sri Lanka. The book explores three architecturally, culturally, and historically renowned temples, namely the Brihadisvara Temple, Thanjavur, Brihadisvara Temple, Gangaikondacholapuram, and Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram. Rajaraja I's magnum opus, Brihadisvara Temple, is also known as Rajarajesvaram (after its patron) and Thanjai Periya Kovil (Thanjavore's Big Temple). The construction began in 1003 CE and was completed in 1010 CE Rajendra completed the construction of the Gangaikondacholapuram in 1035. Compared to Thanjavur's straight and harsh tower, its 53-meter Vimanam features recessed corners and a beautiful upward-curving movement. Built by Raja Raja II in the 13th century, the Airavatesvara Temple complex in Darasuram is home to a 24-meter tall Vimanam and a stone statue of Lord Shiva. The temples bear witness to the Chola kings' outstanding accomplishments in sculpture, bronze casting, painting, and architecture. This book provides a bird's-eye view of the three gigantic temples, serving as a simple guidebook.
