When high-definition television (HDTV) telecast took shape, a particular section of the people started enjoying cricket matches live, sitting in the comfort zone of their homes. But there was a time, when the games were played miles away from home and radio commentary was the only recourse available to follow a match.
When I was a child, I had this ambition of representing the country. At that tender age my elder brother G.R. Jagannath told me about the commentary. He would get up early to tune into the commentary from Australia or tune in to BBC and listen with keen interest and visualise the actions from the words spoken by commentators. I did not understand some of the words of the commentary, but my elder brother would explain them to me with a lot of affection.
Thus, it was quite natural that I got personally impacted and impressed by all English and Hindi commentators of our country. I was particularly attracted to the exciting style of commentaries of Suresh Saraiya, Anant Setalwad, Ravi Chaturvedi, and my good friend Sushil Doshi.
Sushil's commitment and love for commentary is exemplary. In 2021, he was part of world Road Safety series commentary panel. His interest and enthusiasm were to be seen to be believed-almost like when he started as a baby commentator five decades ago. To be competitively there, you need to have an undying love and dedication for the art of commentary. Perhaps, Sushil considered commentary not as workload but as a religion. The same spirit appears in every outing and in each stint of commentary. Those who want to learn the art of commentary, I would advise them to take a lesson or two from him and get inspiration.
...And now, Sushil has written a complete book on the art and science of cricket commentary. I wish to congratulate him. I am confident that armed with precious experience, his book will prove interesting as well as educative. The subjects included in the book indicate the amount of deep thinking and intelligence behind this effort.
