Preface

Professor Kalyan Kumar Dasgupta is a familiar name in the domain of Indology. An exhaustive list of his publications has been furnished as Appendix to the present volume to provide a glimpse of the vast panorama of intellectual pursuits of the learned scholar. This volume represents yet another attempt to felicitate him for his significant contributions as an lndologist and man of letters. In response to our request large number of papers were received from various corners of the world in recognition of Professor Dasgupta’s scholarship. The papers compiled in this volume represent various aspects of Indian history and historiography covering a wide range of subjects which include popular movements, tribal history, system of education, role of temples, traditions and social customs, trade and ports, India’s foreign policy and on historiography. As the papers have been contributed by specialists on the concerned subject, the reader will have the advantage of going through the best in his area of interest. In compiling the papers the Editors have taken pains to ensure the qualitative aspect as befitting tribute to the great savant of Bengal. They will feel their humble labour fruitful if the volume meets the expectations of the students and scholars engaged in historical research.

The books arrived today and I have to congratulate you on such a WONDERFUL packing job! I have never, ever, received such beautifully and carefully packed items from India in all my years of ordering. Each and every book arrived in perfect shape--thanks to the extreme care you all took in double-boxing them and using very strong boxes. (Oh how I wished that other businesses in India would learn to do the same! You won't believe what some items have looked like when they've arrived!) Again, thank you very much. And rest assured that I will soon order more books. And I will also let everyone that I know, at every opportunity, how great your business and service has been for me. Truly very appreciated, Namaste.
