Book Description
Introduction
The Atharvaveda is the fourth and the last veda. Atharvaveda mentions the means to attain all that which makes life happy and comfortable. Rgveda, Samaveda and Yajurveda are the religions texts as they all describe the rituals related to Yajñas but there were no such prayers in Atharvaveda. That perhaps was the reason that Atharvaveda was not included in the catagory of the Veda in the beginning. Rgveda, Samaveda and Yajurveda were known 'वेदत्रयी' but it appears that afterwards when the 20th Mandala was added in it which contains the eulogies and the praises of Indra, Atharvaveda was also named as Veda. Then there were four Vedas-Rg. Sama, Yaju and Atharvaveda. Atharvaveda was composed much later. The reason for this may be that when the three Vedas were completed, the Vedic Aryas moved from Saptasindhu plains towards South and gradually befriended with the natives of India called Dravida, Dasa and Dasyu, The Vedic Ayyans noticed that the way is which the Aryans used to achieve their desired objects by performing yajñas, these indigenous also got their desires fulfilled by practising some yogika processes in no time and also without spending money on the rituals. The Vedic Aryans were greatly influenced by them. They also started using those methods along with chanting of the mantras. These successful experiments purified by the chanting of the mantras were placed in Atharvaveda.
