Book Description
Preface
The outcome of this research entitled, "The Bagals of Border Bengal-a Cattle-herding Community in Search of Identity' is based on first hand data lected from the group called the Bagals-a marginalised section. My attempt is an ethnographic account with a view to understand how far their mode of life and cultural pattern are akin to other Scheduled communities.

Introduction
India, a country of distinct geo-physical background, is inhabited by diverse groups of people. Details of cultural history or systematic ethnographic account of these groups of people are inadequate. However, myths and mythologies of these people substantiate many more events, which identify their cultural entities and thus help us to know their early history. In absence of a systematic account we have tried to identify them with distinctive physio-cultural traits from some ancient stories gathered from them. The caste-build social system of India- segmented as rich and poor, high and low reflects the social hierarchy of our country.
