भारतीय संस्कृति में लोक नाटकों का अपना विशिष्ट स्थान है। लोक नाटकों के माध्यम से लोक जीवन के अनेक पहलुओं को जनमानस के समक्ष अत्यन्त प्रभावी तरीके से प्रस्तुत किया जाता है। भारतीय संस्कृति में काव्यों को रमणीयता की अद्भुत प्रस्तुति माना जाता है, जिसमें नाट्य विधा को विशेष स्थान प्राप्त है।
स्वाधीनता संग्राम की पृष्ठभूमि में भी लोक नाट्यों के सहयोग को भुलाया नहीं जा सकता है। स्वाधीनता संग्राम की आवाज को जन-जन तक पहुँचाने में विहार के भिखारी ठाकुर द्वारा नाटकों का लेखन एवं मंचन समय-समय पर अनेक स्थानों पर प्रस्तुत किया गया, जिससे जनमानस का स्वाधीनता के प्रति भाव जागृत हुआ। इसके फलस्वरूप सामान्य जनमानस ने स्वाधीनता संग्राम में अपने कर्तव्यों के प्रति सजग होकर सहयोग प्रदान किया, जिसकी प्रशंसा शब्दों में व्यक्त नहीं की जा सकती।
विहार की लोक जीवन एवं विशेष रूप से श्रमिकों के विस्थापन की त्रासदी का चित्रण बिदेसिया लोक नाट्य से करने वाले नाटककार श्री भिखारी ठाकुर के योगदान को संरक्षित, संवर्द्धित तथा जन-जन तक पहुँचाने के उद्देश्य से 'विदेसिया' पुस्तक का प्रकाशन केन्द्र द्वारा किया जा रहा है। इसके लेखक श्री बद्री नारायण ने बिहार के विभिन्न क्षेत्रों में भ्रमण कर अथक परिश्रम के पश्चात् सामग्री का संकलन किया है। उत्तर मध्य क्षेत्र सांस्कृतिक केन्द्र उनके सार्थक प्रयास के लिए साधुवाद देता है। यह प्रकाशन सुधी पाठकों को बिदेसिया के विविध पक्षों की किंचित जानकारी देने में सफल हुआ तो केन्द्र अपने प्रयास को सार्थक मानेगा।
In the precolonial period when the European world extended its domain across the globe through its colonies, it needed a huge source of cheap and abundant labour to work in the sugar, coffee, jute and other plantations in its various colonies. After the abolition of slavery, it found this sources of labour in the Bhojpuri region of India. In the mid nineteenth century there took place a massive migration from this region to various European colonies like Surinam, Mauritius, Fiji and Trinidad. Even after these countries were decolonised, a good number of migrants remained behind in these countries. The present generation of the original Bhojpuri migrants have now imbibed the culture and heritage of their destination countries, but there is a growing urge within them to reconstruct the past of their ancestors and to establish a link between the common cultural heritage of people from Indian descent in various regions in the world, with the culture of the Bhojpuri region of India.
The migration of the Bhojpuari indentured labourers caused a heavy emotional loss and suffering, both for the migrants and for their loved ones who were left behind. This pain gave birth to a distinct folklore and cultural tradition in the Bhojpuri region as well as among the migrant communities at the destination points. This folk culture was given the name Bidesia Folk Culture. The present study aims to explore the emergence of this folk culture and collect and document the various expressions of this cultural tradition.
Paucity of funds restricted this study to only a pilot exploratory one, but with the availability of more funds it is planned to extend the study to a more indepth and elaborate one. It is hoped that this study will enrich the cultural resource bank of the north central zone of our country.
