Book Description
About the Book
Among innumerable rivers of our motherland, the Cauvery is a major river and a sacred river of South India. This seminar is a modest attempt to analyse the significant role that the Cauvery has played in the heritage of Tamil Nadu, as elucidated in the myths, rituals, literary and other traditions. In recent times, the Cauvery has divided the people of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu due to Cauvery water dispute. However, it was and is acting as a verifying and lite-sustaining force which transcend the barriers of linguistic and regional differences. Indira Gaaw Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh & St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu has chosen as focal theme for its first seminar (16th-17th September 1999) 'The Cauvery - A Living Museum' in order to highlight the aspects cited earlier. The following themes will find prominence: literary history, ecological history, cultural history, biocultural diversity, impact of human intervention on riparian systems, quality of life of the people as enhanced by the river. The second seminar (5th-6th April 2001) had the theme "The Cauvery thy name perenniality". It is hoped that the discussions and sharing during the seminar will help to create a live-in experience of the rich heritage of the Cauvery with its part glory and present reality.

Acknowledgement
It is my special previlege to convey my gratitude to the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, Bhopal which entered into MoU with St. Joseph's College (Autonomous), Tiruchirappalli in 1999 to collaborate in the celebration of Cauvery festival. The joint delibration which the former Director had with this college on 18th March 1999 blossomed into a variety of meaningful programmes. The IGRMS by its constant support and encouragement enabled us to conduct the seminars and earmarked a plot of land at IGRMS campus for the creation of Sacred Groves representing Tamil Nadu. I wish to single out this solid support extended by the Director Dr.Sujit Som, INC, IGRMS, who visited us during second seminar and also readily came forward to publish proceedings of the two seminars.
