About The Book

A Comprehensive History of the Koch kingdom' is the first academic effort by a host of scholars and professors to bring out into light the total history inclusive of political, socio-economic and cultural narratives and analyses of the kingdom, preceding which, there is the story of its formation from 1496 to 1515. From 1515, the Koch kingdom continued for 435 years till the year 1949; and it had to undergo outside invasions, infringements and bifurcation in the long course of some centuries, but its existence remained to be a big phenomenon on account of its religio-cultural eclecticism in spite of its patronization of Hindu culture vis-a-vis the challenges of the Muslim Sultans and the Mughal subedars of Bengal. The Koch Kingdom survived for centuries from the medieval to the modern period through alliances, conflicts and understanding with the Ahoms, the Mughals, the Bhutanese and the British. The kingdom, inhabited by different ethno-racial groups of people, left behind indelible marks of socio-cultural and religious diversity, progress and unity in course of historical evolution of people in eastern India.

PREFACE

In Eastern India, the Koch Kingdom, roughly circumscribed by the River Karatoya on the west, the Himalayan peaks of Bhutan to the north, the River Manas and Brahmaputra on the east and the confluence of the Teesta and Brahmaputra in the south, continued for a long period of 435 years from 1515 to 1949. There took place outside invasions, infringements and bifurcation of the kingdom in the long course of some centuries, but its existence remained to be a big phenomenon in the history of eastern India. The Koch Kingdom survived for centuries through alliances, conflicts and understanding with the Ahoms, the Mughals, the Bhutanese and the British. The Koch kingdom inhabited by different ethno-racial groups of people from the medieval to the modern period left indelible marks of socio-cultural and religious diversity, progress and unity in course of historical evolution of people in eastern India.

There have hitherto been only few books on the Koch Kingdom, but none of them covers the entire spectrum and different aspects of its history. Most of the few books, as available, are bereft of the most required researches to bring the unknown factors of the kingdom into light; therefore, such books are just copies of the preliminary writings on the history of the kingdom in the past. On the review of such lacunae in the historical studies about the Koch kingdom, there cropped up the plan of putting together the writings of the best scholars and connoisseurs in the field for the composition and edition of a book covering all the aspects-political, social, economic and cultural- of the evolution of the history of the Koch Kingdom. This book, per se, is an attempt to make the overall history of the kingdom apprehensible in the totality of its aspects to all the readers of history.

I am very much grateful to all the contributors for their efforts in accomplishing the task of providing their valuable articles, which are here in their original forms, devoid of changes, as chapters in this comprehensive history of the Koch Kingdom. With profound belief in and respect to the scholarship and erudition of the contributors, the editor's role has been an aberration off the conventional sense as he has restricted himself within the task of just collecting the articles and concatenating them in the string of chapters in thematic order. It is so done mainly to present the chapters in the contributors' very unique styles of language and variations of opinion as to the facts of the history of the Koch kingdom.
