The crucial question explored in this book is: Can we as human beings consciously act to help ourselves recover rapidly from sickness or injury? And if so, what are the most effective mind/body techniques for accelerating the recovery process? Based on new medical research and on their extraordinary success in teaching sick people how to activate and balance their own immune systems, therapist John Selby and Manfred von Luhmann offer twelve mind-body methods that provide anyone suffering from an illness or injury with a step-by-step programme for inner self-healing to supplement a doctor's care. It also includes invaluable information for maintaining health and wellness by boosting your immune system through conscious healing. "(Selby and von Luhmann's) approach emphasizes a team effort of the best medical and spiritual support coupled with inner determination and responsibility to heal."
JOHN SELBY studied at Princeton, the University of California, the San Fancisco Theological Seminary and the Radix Institute. He has researched at the New Jersey Neuropsychiatric Institute, the Bureau of Research in Neurology and Psychiatry, and the NI of Health. He has developed health programmes for many prestigious organizations and written numerous books on psychological, environmental and medical factors in health and illness. MANFRED VON LUHMANN, MD became the Director of the Psychosomatic Cancer Clinic, in Kassel, Germany. He and John Selby developed the basic programmes discussed in this book whilst in practice together.
A number of years have now passed since my colleagues and I invited John Selby to join our medical team in developing a new interdisciplinary approach to immune- system balancing and activation. This book you presently have in your hands is the final result of both our joint research in Europe and the ongoing work that Selby has been conducting in the United States during the last two decades. The intent of this research has been to develop a more inclusive, effective program to augment patient recovery from sickness and injury based on both medical and psychological understandings of the human healing process. The programs offered in Conscious Healing concentrate on the twelve basic ways in which a patient can help him- or herself to hasten the recovery process. Our assumption is that you are already receiving adequate medical care, and are seeking effective techniques for enhancing your internal healing process. The magic of this book and the programs included herein developed out of the unique combination of Selby's advanced West Coast psychological innovations and our more mainstream European medical under- standings of the human healing process. By putting Selby's psychological techniques into pragmatic practice here at our hospital we were able to distil from the large array of self-healing techniques that Selby taught us a solid set of twelve programs that have in fact proved themselves valuable in the recovery of our patients. So it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this reality-based healing manual. It is an essential advancement to the concept and actual practice of patient cantered healing. With this book in hand you finally have the tools needed to help. yourself to consciously aid in your recovery from whatever illness or injury, major or minor, that might be afflicting you. Selby has written Conscious Healing in a clear and heartfelt manner, so that you can quickly make contact with the spirit of the book and begin to apply one or more of the programs to your present health situation, learning cognitive and behavioural techniques that can noticeably accelerate your recovery. What we have learned specifically from the last twenty years of medical and psychological research is that the thoughts you habitually run through your mind, day in and day out, do have a direct influence on immune-system functioning. The thoughts you think generate emotional reactions throughout your nervous system and biological constitution, and these emotional reactions can immediately influence your immune system and thus your ability to heal yourself.
The crucial question we are going to explore in this book is this: Can we as human beings consciously act to help ourselves recover rapidly from sickness or injury? And if so, what are the most effective mind/body techniques for accelerating the recovery process? Ever since the advent of modern medicine, observant doctors have been mystified by a wide variation in their patients' rates of recovery from illness or physical trauma. Two people of similar ages and backgrounds can fall ill with the same disease, receive the same medical treatment in the same hospital environment, and yet have extremely different rates of recovery. Even more mystifying have been the many thousands of case studies in which people suffering from supposedly incurable diseases have somehow managed, through their own internal powers, to reverse their conditions and recover fully from the diseases. And, on a more common level, some of us fall ill with the common cold or the flu and recover quite rapidly, while others continue to suffer for weeks and even months, remaining "under the weather" for long periods of time for no medically apparent reason. Even when we consider the healing of a broken arm or leg we find that two people of similar ages and with similar treatments often show extremely different rates of recovery. Furthermore, in each of our lifetimes there are periods when we can recover rapidly from illness, and periods when we have great difficulty in throwing off the very same illness that was easy to recover from earlier. Obviously there are internal factors that are influencing the functioning of our immune systems, and thus determining our rates of recovery. Traditionally the medical community has almost completely overlooked the vast influence of cognitive, emotional, and life-style factors in the healing process. But we are presently seeing a major revolution throughout the medical world, as the science of psychoneuroimmunology advances the evidence of psychological variables in the recovery process. Recent research has documented, for instance, that a person's chronic thought patterns and resulting emotional condition can influence immune-system functioning. Movement habits and diet likewise strongly affect the recovery process. Dominant attitudes and spiritual atmosphere similarly serve as underlying factors in recovering from an illness, and also in maintaining good health after recovery.
